Crooked Elections
In the last two elections,
Republican dishonesty has overwhelmed the system and elected George W.
Bush. In 200, Republican candidate George W. Bush was given the
office by about 500 votes in Florida. Two things caused an
antidemocratic result. Firstly, Florida's governor (George W.
Bush's brother) got a law passed "cleaning up" the voting roles by
eliminating about 90,000voters claimed to be convicted felons not
eligible to vote under Florida law. Ninety percent of those taken
off the voting roles were not felons. The name was claimed to be
similar to that of a felon. Addresses, birth dates, and gender
were not checked. Most taken off were African Americans.
African Americans voted overwhelmingly for Gore.
Secondly, the Florida vote count was never officially completed. Florida's Secretary of State (George Bush's Florida campaign manager) stopped the count. The U.S. Supreme Court agreed with only Republican justices voting to do so. Groups later counted the votes the Republicans refused to count. They found that even with tens of thousands refused the right to vot, Al Gore still won Florida by a large margin. In 2004, the Ohio Secretary of State (President Bush's Ohio campaign manager) removed voting locations from key Democratic precincts, resulting in many voters in those areas waiting in line for hours to vote. Thens of thousands gove up the wait and went home without voting. We ask for a national law prohibiting election officials at any level from being partisan. Election commissions whould be independent and totally fair. |
